Getting your home ready for the change of season.

October already! What a strange year it has been so far. In some ways it feels like it’s gone so fast and in others I literally cannot remember life pre March 2020!

There’s one thing that’s for sure, life is nowhere near back to normal and who knows when it will be. However, rather than focus on the ‘challenges’ that we face, I’d rather concentrate on the good stuff.

Autumn is here and it’s my favourite season! Who doesn’t love chunky jumpers, flickering candles, the changing leaves, log burners, hot chocolate, woolly hats…. The list goes on and on.

As we head into cooler night and shorter days, here are our top 10 ways to turn your home into a cosy sanctuary!

1. Outdoor living is not just for summer.
Normally at this time of year we’d be packing away the BBQ and covering up the garden furniture, but as Covid19 has forced us to spend more time outdoors I think we’ll keep them out a bit longer - I quite like a winter BBQ! Why not wrap up warm, grab some blankets and lamps and light the fire pit.

2. Get the lighting right.
Now that the nights are drawing in, your choice of lighting is more important than ever. You want to create layers of lighting to add depth to your room and create a warm ambience. Mix table and floor lamps to maximise the cosy factor.

3. Increase the texture
One way to transition from summer to autumn is to introduce heavier soft furnishings. Think faux fur, deep pile rugs and chunky knits. Cushions, throws and beanbags all add to the effect.

4. Time to get practical.
Make sure that your home is dry and properly insulated before the weather really turns. Block up any draughts and tackle those DIY jobs you’ve been putting off. Now is the time to get your fireplaces in order; have gas fires checked, chimneys swept and log stores stocked up.

5. Candles - Lots of them!
Candles are the ultimate way to create a cosy autumnal space. Not only do they give off a welcoming and tranquil glow, a scented candle can fill your house with a pleasing aroma. Be careful not to overdo it with scented candles… just one scented candle should be enough so make sure the others are unscented. If you’re not quite ready to light the fire, placing multiple candles in the hearth will establish a stylish focal point.

6. Time for a clear out.
The start of autumn is an ideal time to give your home a good declutter and clean. During the colder winter months, the lack of ventilation and warm moist air (mainly due to drying clothes indoors), provides an ideal environment for bugs and germs to flourish. Throw open your windows whenever possible, clear out any cupboards and have a good old sort out and tidy up. Recycle what you can, donate to clothes banks and charity shops, as they say – One man’s trash is another mans treasure.

7. Get your garden in shape.
Soon it will be time to give your lawn one good final cut and rake up any leaves. Give your paving a good scrub with a stiff brush (or power washer if you have one!) and some soapy water. This will make it less slippery during the wet months ahead. Now is also the time to plant any bulbs ready to flower in spring.

8. Going for gold.
Why not introduce some fabulous metallic accessories into your home in materials such as gold, copper and brass. These rich hues really add warmth and depth to a space and reflect the light beautifully. Plus they are the perfect accessory as we head towards the festive season!

9. Plants & flowers.
Interior plants and flower arrangements should reflect what is naturally in season. Stylish & elegant branches, twigs, leaves & berries look great in the autumn. Alternatively, preserved flowers are the perfect maintenance-free solution to filling your home with real flowers and foliage all year round.

10. Sofa Snuggles and a box set binge!
Finally, the best way to spend an autumn evening is snuggled up on your sofa in your PJ’s and nothing beats a good series binge. My current obsession is ‘This is us’ – I’m Soooo excited for Season 5 coming later this month. Check it out – It’s very funny, heart-warming and it’s got a pretty good looking cast – Hello Kevin – What’s not to like?!
